summary_large_image Card

This is the most common card type for articles, blog posts, and landing pages. It displays a large image above the title, description, and domain.

  • Recommended: 1200 x 630 pixels
  • Minimum: 300 x 157 pixels
  • Maximum: 4096 x 4096 pixels
  • File size: Under 5 MB
  • Formats: JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF (first frame only)
<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image" />
<meta name="twitter:title" content="Your Page Title" />
<meta name="twitter:description" content="Your page description" />
<meta name="twitter:image" content="https://yoursite.com/image.png" />
<meta name="twitter:image:alt" content="Image description" />

summary Card

The summary card shows a small square thumbnail alongside the title and description. Good for homepages and profile pages.

  • Recommended: 240 x 240 pixels or larger
  • Displayed as: 120 x 120 pixels
  • Aspect ratio: 1:1 (square)
  • Non-square images are cropped to center
<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary" />
<meta name="twitter:title" content="Your Page Title" />
<meta name="twitter:description" content="Your page description" />
<meta name="twitter:image" content="https://yoursite.com/square-image.png" />

Open Graph Fallback

Twitter/X will use Open Graph tags as a fallback if Twitter-specific tags are not present:

Twitter TagFalls back to
twitter:titleog:title
twitter:descriptionog:description
twitter:imageog:image
twitter:cardNo fallback — defaults to summary

If you already have Open Graph tags, you only need to add twitter:card to control the card type.

Best Practices

Always set twitter:card

Without this tag, Twitter defaults to the summary card type even if you have a large image. Set it to summary_large_image for blog posts and articles.

Use absolute image URLs

Twitter's crawler cannot resolve relative paths. Always use the full URL starting with https://.

Add alt text

Use twitter:image:alt to describe the image for accessibility. Twitter shows this text when the image fails to load.

Test with the Card Validator

Use Twitter's Card Validator to preview your card and clear the cache for a specific URL.

Create a Twitter Card Image
